Description
Homocysteine Test
What does this test measure?
This blood test quantifies Homocysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. Elevated homocysteine is an important marker because it can damage blood vessels and has been linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke), as well as cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. Homocysteine levels often rise due to B-vitamin deficiencies (B6, B12, folate) or genetic variants like MTHFR.
Who is this test most suitable for?
- Diet low in B vitamins (e.g. vegan without supplementation)
- Smokers (tend to have higher homocysteine)
- Sedentary individuals or those with high alcohol intake (can elevate
homocysteine)
Clinical Use
This test is used to screen for cardiovascular risk beyond standard cholesterol tests, or in the evaluation of patients with a family history of heart disease or stroke at a young age. It’s also part of workups for memory loss or neuropathy sometimes, given its neurological impact. If high, treatment may include vitamin supplementation to lower homocysteine and potentially reduce risk.
